At SafeMap, Inc. d/b/a Zero, a Delaware non-profit, non-stock corporation (“SafeMap,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), we take your privacy seriously. Please read this Privacy Policy to learn the privacy practices of SafeMap with respect to our collection and use of Personal Data (defined below), including on our website, mobile website, or mobile application related, linked or otherwise connected thereto (collectively, the “App”).  By using or accessing our Services (defined below) in any manner, you acknowledge that you accept the practices and policies outlined below, and you hereby consent that we will collect, use and share your Personal Data as described in this Privacy Policy, where and as permitted by applicable law.

Remember that your use of SafeMap’s Services is at all times subject to ourTerms of Use,which incorporates this Privacy Policy.  Any terms we use in this Policy without defining them have the definitions given to them in the Terms of Use.

What this Privacy Policy Covers

This Privacy Policy covers how we treat Personal Data that we gather when you access or use our Services.  For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, “Personal Data” means any information that identifies, relates to, describes, is reasonably capable of being associated with, or could be reasonably linked, directly or indirectly, with a particular individual, device or household, and also includes information referred to as “personally identifiable information” or “personal information” under applicable data privacy laws, rules, or regulations.  It does not include de-identified or aggregate information, or public information lawfully available from governmental records. This Privacy Policy does not cover the practices of companies we don’t own or control or people we don’t manage.

What Personal Data Does SafeMap Collect?

Below we detail the categories of Personal Data that we collect from you, either directly or automatically.  We also detail and provide more information about our data collection practices.

Category of Personal Data

  • Your device and contact data (i.e., phone number and email address)
  • Your geolocation data (i.e., GPS information)

Information You Provide to Us:

We receive and store information you knowingly provide to us when you elect to use the Services, including:

  • Your mobile telephone number; and
  • Any information you provide in emails or other communications with us.

Information Collected Automatically:

We receive and store certain information when you elect to use certain Services, as this information helps us to detect potential abuse of the Zero app, including:

  • Your location based on GPS information.
  • The IP address of the device that you use for the Services.

How Does SafeMap Use My Information?

SafeMap uses your Personal Data for the following purposes:

Providing the following services (“Services”) to you, including:

  • Communicating with you via text message to verify your device phone number;
  • Providing you with the Services and important information;
  • Meeting or fulfilling the reason you provided the information to us;
  • Providing support and assistance for the Services;
  • Improving the Services, including testing, research, internal analytics, and product development; and
  • Fraud protection, security and debugging.

Corresponding with You:

  • Providing you with alerts and notifications in connection with the Services; and
  • Processing your requests and inquiries.

Pursuing legitimate interests, such as research and development, processing for historical, scientific or statistical purposes, and performing activities carried out in the public interest.

Meeting legal requirements and enforcing legal terms:

  • Fulfilling our legal obligations under applicable law, regulation, court order or other legal process, such as preventing, detecting and investigating security incidents and potentially illegal or prohibited activities;
  • Protecting the rights, property and safety of you, SafeMap, and other users;
  • Protecting the security and integrity of the App;
  • Confirming your identity;
  • Enforcing any agreements with you; and
  • Resolving disputes.

SafeMap may combine your Personal Data and other information collected about your use of the App, and also supplement with information from external sources for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.  For example, information that SafeMap collects about you may be combined by SafeMap with other information available to SafeMap through third parties for research and measurement purposes, including measuring the effectiveness of content or programs.  This information from other sources may include age, gender, demographic, geographic, personal interest, product purchase activity or other information.  We may report aggregate information, which is not able to be identified back to an individual user of the Services, to our current or prospective business partners.

We will not collect additional categories of Personal Data or use the Personal Data we collected for materially different, unrelated, or incompatible purposes without providing you notice.

How We Share Your Personal Data


We employ other companies and people to perform tasks on our behalf and need to share your information with them to provide products or services to you; for example, we use Google Cloud to host data collected from your mobile device.  Unless we tell you differently, our agents do not have any right to use the Personal Data we share with them beyond what is necessary to assist us.

Disclosures to Protect Us or Others

We may access, preserve, and disclose your Personal Data with third parties for legitimate business purposes, or to comply with legal obligations.  For example, we may share Personal Data when we believe doing so is required or appropriate: (i) to comply with law enforcement or national security requests and legal process, such as a court order or subpoena; (ii) to protect your, our or others’ rights, property, health, or safety; (iii) for public health reasons; (iv) to enforce SafeMap’s policies and contracts; (v) in connection with an investigation or prosecution of suspected or actual illegal activity; or (vi) if we, in good faith, believe that disclosure is otherwise necessary or advisable.

Business Transfers

We may choose to buy or sell assets and may share and/or transfer customer information in connection with the evaluation of and entry into such transactions.  Also, if we (or our assets) are acquired, or if we go out of business, enter bankruptcy, or go through some other change of control, Personal Data could be one of the assets transferred to or acquired by a third party.  However, we note that any entity acquiring our business or assets would have an obligation to use the Personal Data that comes with it strictly in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of us or our assets may continue to use your Personal Data only as set forth in this policy.

Anonymized and Aggregated Information

We may anonymize your Personal Data so that you are not identified personally, and we may use and disclose derived and aggregated insights from such anonymous data in a number of ways, including research, public health analysis, and any other legally permissible purposes.

We Do Not Sell Your Personal Data

We do not disclose and have not disclosed your Personal Data to any other third parties for any purpose other than those described in this Privacy Policy or unless the law requires it or you provide your affirmative authorization.

We, also, will not sell and have not sold within the past 12 months the Personal Information of minors under sixteen (16) years of age to non-affiliated third parties without affirmative authorization.

Data Security and Retention

We seek to protect your Personal Data from unauthorized access, use and disclosure using appropriate physical, technical, organizational and administrative security measures based on the type of Personal Data and how we are processing that data.  For example, the Services use industry standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to allow for the encryption of Personal Data you provide to us.  You should also help protect your data by appropriately protecting and limiting access to your device.  Although we work to protect the security of your account and Personal Data we collect from you, please be aware that no method of transmitting data over the Internet or storing data is completely secure.  We cannot guarantee the complete security of any data you share with us.

To the maximum extent allowed by applicable law, you agree and acknowledge that SafeMap will not be liable or responsible if any information about you is intercepted, accessed, and/or used by an unintended recipient.  If you have reason to believe that the security of your communications or Personal Data has been compromised, please notify us immediately using the contact information below.

We retain Personal Data for as long as you have an open account with us or for no longer than is necessary to provide you with our Services.  Those periods are also based on complying with applicable data protections laws, applicable legal and regulatory obligations, resolving disputes or collecting fees owed, or as is otherwise permitted or required by applicable law, rule or regulation.  We may further retain information in an anonymous or aggregated form where that information would not identify you personally.

Personal Data of Children

We are committed to protecting the privacy of children.  As noted in the Terms of Use, we do not knowingly collect or solicit Personal Data from children under thirteen (13); if you are a child under thirteen (13), please do not attempt to register for or otherwise use the Services or send us any Personal Data.  If we learn we have collected Personal Data from a child under thirteen (13), we will delete that information as quickly as possible.  If you believe that a child under thirteen (13) may have provided us Personal Data, please contact us at

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We’re constantly trying to improve our Services, so we may need to change this Privacy Policy and reserve the right to do so from time to time.  Changes will be effective upon being posted unless we advise otherwise.  If we make any material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will alert you to any such changes by placing a notice on the home screen of the App and/or by some other means.  Please note that if you’ve opted not to receive legal notice emails from us (or you haven’t provided us with your email address), those legal notices will still govern your use of the Services and you are still responsible for reading and understanding them.  If you use the Services after any changes to the Privacy Policy have been posted, that means you agree to all of the changes.  Use of information we collect is subject to the Privacy Policy in effect at the time such information is collected.  We encourage you to check this page from time to time to take notice of any changes we make.  If you do not accept the terms of this Privacy Policy, we ask that you stop use of our App immediately.

Third-Party Services

The Services may contain links to third-party websites or services, and third-party websites and services may reference or link to our Services.  These third-party services are not controlled by us, and we can’t and won’t be responsible for them.  We encourage our users to read the privacy policies of each website and application with which they interact.  We do not endorse, screen or approve, and are not responsible for, the privacy practices or content of such other websites or applications.  You understand that you visit any third-party websites or applications at your own risk and any Personal Data you choose to give to unrelated third parties is not covered by this Privacy Policy.

Do-Not-Track Signals

Certain mechanisms may allow you to send web browser signals, known as “Do Not Track” (“DNT”) signals, indicating your choice to disable tracking on the App.  We do not respond to browser DNT signals at this time and we may not be aware of or able to honor and respond to every such mechanism. Third parties, other than our service providers (such as our website analytics provider), do not have our permission to track which websites you visited prior to and after visiting our website.

California Shine the Light

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, also known as the “Shine The Light” law, permits California residents to annually request, free of charge, information about the Personal Data (if any) disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes in the preceding calendar year.  We do not share your Personal Data with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
